The Hollies Resource Team aims to raise awareness of mental health issues. They work with all communities to help prevent mental health problems and support those recovering from mental illness. They provide a friendly service in a calm and relaxing atmosphere, and help to set up and support self help groups and independent groups both at Rock Street and in the community.
On the following page you will find a full list of support groups available, when they meet and who to contact for more information. It also explains the difference between positive mental health, mental ill health and mental illness, and describes some of the symptoms that people can experience.
What is positive mental health?
Positive mental health is vital to our overall health and wellbeing.
It’s about:
• Feeling in control
• Being able to make rational decisions
• Being in touch with our feelings
• Being able to form positive relationships
• Feeling good about ourselves
• Knowing how to look after
ourselves
We all have our ups and downs, but if the downs start to take over it is
a sign that we need to take some action and get some support.
What’s the difference between mental ill health and mental illness?
We can all experience mental ill health when faced with stress. For example work pressures can cause us stress and as a result we may experience:
• Poor concentration
• Mood swings
• Sleep disturbance
Although such problems are usually temporary and generally respond to support and reassurance, being mentally unhealthy may lead to more serious problems or mental illness. This is when people experience severe and distressing psychological symptoms that seriously impact on their lives. Examples of such symptoms include:
• Anxiety
• Depressed mood
• Obsessional thinking
• Delusions and hallucinations
This help may take the form of counselling, psychotherapy, holistic therapy, drug treatment, lifestyle change or joining a self-help group.
